NCERT Removes Controversial Map from Class 8 Textbook After Accuracy Concerns

New Delhi, India — The National Council of Educational Research and Training has removed a controversial map from its Class 8 Social Science textbook following objections over historical accuracy.

The map had depicted Rajasthan as part of the Maratha Empire, a claim that several historians and community members stated was factually incorrect.

After the controversy, NCERT decided to remove the map from the revised digital edition for the 2025–26 academic session.

Experts and historians argued that Jaisalmer and other regions were independent princely states and were not directly ruled by the Marathas. This led to strong reactions and demands for correction.

The decision comes amid ongoing debates over how history is represented in school textbooks, with increasing calls for better accuracy and expert review before publishing such content.
