NCERT textbooks under BJP government spark outrage over portrayal of Maharana Pratap

India — The latest textbooks released by the NCERT under the Bharatiya Janata Party government have triggered controversy over the portrayal of Maharana Pratap.

According to the concerns raised, Maharana Pratap is presented only as a defeated ruler, with no clear mention of his victories, including the decisive Battle of Dewair, which marked the end of Mughal dominance in Mewar.

The selective narration has led to strong reactions, with critics arguing that it reflects the same “history distortion” that leaders of the BJP have previously attributed to earlier governments.

Observers claim that instead of addressing historical gaps, the new textbooks compress, dilute, or omit key Rajput victories, resulting in a one-sided narrative of historical figures.

Critics view this as part of a broader concern regarding representation, stating that omissions in historical content raise questions about how India’s past is being presented in school education.
